Edmonton Transportation
Edmonton Transit System (ETS)
Edmonton's public transit system began in the Fall of 1908, when the Edmonton Radial Railway followed its first streetcar route along 21 kilometres of track up Jasper Avenue through the downtown core. With a population of 18,500 and a mere four-car fleet, Edmonton remained unique as the first prairie city with a public streetcar system. The first motor bus route began operation in mid 1932, and the last streetcar was taken out of service in 1951.
The system has grown to encompass a fleet of over 750 diesel and trolley buses and 26 community buses covering over 140 routes, including a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system with 37 light rail vehicles and 10 stations. Six low floor articulated buses were added to the fleet in 2001. ETS also offers transportation for persons with disabilities, the Disabled Adult Transit Service (DATS). ETS also includes in its fleet diesel powered low floor buses and community buses.
Edmonton Transit has three operating garages, an LRT facility, an information centre located in the downtown and a DATS facility. Transit fleet maintenance is carried out by Mobile Equipment Services (MES) in 4 facilities including one heavy repair facility. The Edmonton Transit System is a division of the City of Edmonton Transportation and Streets Department.
On a typical day, ETS carries about 74,000 people, which is about 12% of the city's population.
